Reclaim Composure When Everything Hits at Once with a Resilient Reset™

Originally Published November 19, 2025 on LinkedIn by Kimberly Arnold

The paradox of leadership: The moments that demand your sharpest thinking are the same moments that flood your system and cloud your judgment.

A board challenge. A critical departure. Unexpected bad news.

Your body reacts before your mind catches up.

You know this moment—when a personal crisis collides with professional demands and you have to show up sharp anyway.

Most leaders handle this one of two ways:

→ Disconnect and push through (costs you clarity)

→ Ruminate and spiral (costs you energy)

Both keep your stress response activated. Both keep you reactive instead of strategic.

There's a third option.

In my latest Resilient Reset, I share the practice that helped me lead through my own compounding crisis: a car accident, totaled vehicle, re-injury, and business launch—all colliding at once.

Energize and Soothe takes 60 seconds. It uses warm touch to trigger oxytocin, shift your nervous system from threat to calm, and restore your capacity for clear thinking.

Resilient Reset™: Reclaim Composure When Everything Hits at Once

When something blindsides you:  a board challenge, a critical departure, or unexpected bad news, your body reacts before your mind catches up. The wave of intensity is immediate. And often overwhelming.

Most leaders handle this by disconnecting: push through, stay busy, keep moving. But that disconnect clouds your judgment and drains energy precisely when you need clarity and stamina to keep going.

What if you could meet the moment fully and reclaim your composure? Clear your mind, steady your system, and stay thoughtful and strategic even when pressure compounds.

Three weeks ago, I was in a car accident that sprained my foot, ankle, and knee. For the first four days, I did what needed doing—health appointments, insurance claims, accident statements. I thought I was handling it well.

Then day five hit, and reality landed: After recovering from two hip surgeries this year, I was back to walking with a cane and my foot in a boot. My car, my adventure companion for 18 years, was totaled. All of this while launching two new programs, my website and this newsletter.

I felt my energy dip and knew I couldn't afford to lose focus. But I also couldn't just power through and pretend I was fine.

You know this moment, when a personal crisis collides with professional demands and you have to show up sharp anyway.

So I paused. I let myself feel the sadness without getting lost in it. I used a practice that allowed me to soothe my system and recharge my energy so I could keep leading.

That practice is what I'm sharing with you today.

Welcome to Resilient Reset™

Your biweekly practice to stay strategic under stress in seconds. Each edition shares one science-backed micro-practice to help your body recover faster and perform better when pressure peaks.

These are resilience reps: quick to learn, easy to apply, and designed to build muscle memory for composure as your competitive advantage.

Today's Reset: Energize and Soothe

When pressure compounds and emotions run high, most leaders default to one of two responses:

Disconnect: Push through, stay busy, ignore what you're feeling

Press Repeat: Ruminate, spiral, replay the situation on loop

Both prevent you from being strategic.

The first costs you clarity. The second costs you energy.

Both keep your stress response activated, flooding your system with cortisol and keeping you reactive instead of responsive.

This practice gives you a third option: Acknowledge what you're feeling, soothe your nervous system, and recharge your capacity to think clearly all in minutes.

When everything hits at once, you don't have to choose between feeling it and leading through it. You can do both.

Here's how it works: Warm, gentle touch triggers oxytocin release, which shifts your nervous system from threat response to calm and connection. Your hands become the lever that signals safety to your entire system.

Practice Now: Energize and Soothe

Watch the video or follow the steps below.  Try this now:

1 - Rub your hands together for 10 seconds.  Notice the friction and warmth as you rub.

2 - Pull your hands apart 6 inches.  Feel the energy vibrating in your hands.

3 - Place your hands on your chest.

4 - Inhale, notice the rise of your chest into your hands.

5 - Exhale, notice your hands sinking into your chest.

6 - Repeat 4 & 5.  Linger as long as you like.

When I practiced this during my own moment of sadness, I envisioned literally holding my heart, giving it a gentle massage. I felt relieved and ready for what was next.

Make It Stick

The best way to make this practice your own is to repeat it even once daily.  When you repeat this practice you teach your body how to soothe yourself.

Why repeat it daily?  When you’re in an emotionally intense moment, your mind will be flooded and not remember what to do, but your body will automatically respond.

Pick a time when you will consistently give yourself one minute to practice.

My suggestion is to add it before or after lunch.

Energize and Soothe each day and you’ll build the muscle memory to reclaim your composure as your leadership advantage.

I love to hear from you. Share your high-pressure scenarios or questions in the comments. I read and respond to every one.

Reset Fast. Stay Strategic. Lead with Composure.
